Education In China

Teachers are so cool...

Teachers have so much respect that sometimes people refer to them as the second parent to the child. There is a phase, "One day a teacher, always a teacher," meaning that even if you only receive a day of education from a teacher, you should respect him/her throughout your life time.

The teacher also has power over the student, unlike in the West. If the child misbehaves, the teacher will not hesitate to punish him. Yes, this includes hitting.

The respect will not just last through a few good words but through actions as well. When the class begins, all the students will stand up and wait for the teacher to enter, and only sit when there is permission. If you have a question, you should always raise your hand, and stand up when called upon. Lastly, when class ends, all students will once again stand up to say good bye.

Debate...

I promise you a debate didn't I? Okay, let's start. To defend my theory that everybody, both Western and Eastern, is equally stupid, I will present two points.

First, the education in China is too traditional and concrete. Everything the child learns from the time he steps into school through college is greatly based on books. Now, don't get me wrong, I truly believe that learning from books will build a long lasting foundation. However, too much concrete learning will not support the creativity.

The West has a phrase to describe this situation perfectly, "You should always learn outside the box." To me, that is what the education of China is missing, because few classes help a child with imagination or create an opportunity to apply what the student has learned.

The second point I will make is the West does not have a great foundation for a child. Truly, there are a lot of classes that help a child's imagination, such as art and music. However, when I go to some gas stations, there are still some people having a hard time calculating the change back to the customers.

The dropout rate is extremely high. However, every school that I have attended in the West (U.S) is based on application. This is good, because it creates an opportunity to explore. I feel like the West does "get out of the box" more often and sometimes is even able to stand on the box. However, since the foundation of the box is so weak, soon or later, it will break.

Ladies and gentlemen that is why I think everybody is equally stupid (or smart, if you are optimistic). So, next time if you are walking on the street and see a Chinese person (if you are Western), or a Western (if you are Chinese), don't think that you are smarter. Everyone is equally intelligent.

You may say "Well, Dat, you say so much about the box, but do you have a solution?" My reply will be "NO." Sorry, I'm still too young.

That's my two cents in the matter. Do you have any comment? If you do, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for joining me today. Hope everyone is having a nice break. From where I am and wherever you are, have a good night and good luck everyone
