Visa for India

Medical (also known as the "M" Visa)

With this visa, foreigners are allowed to stay in India for a period of one year with the sole purpose of receiving medical attention at a recognized medical institution. For example, you cannot go to a massage parlor at the end of the street to get treatment for your back pain (even though, I bet they have some very special techniques as treatment hehe). That parlor is not a well known medical institution.

In some circumstances, you may extend your stay up to another 12 months. This extension will depend on your medical status. Also, an "M" visa will allow you to have up to 4 entries into India, but the fourth entry will only be granted under certain conditions (meaning it can be difficult to obtain).

Employment Visa

Last but not least, the Employment Visa is reserved for the applicant who is employed or a paid intern of an Indian company. This visa initially will only grant a one year stay. After you have reached the time limit, you may extend year by year and up to 5 times (5 years). However, an Employment Visa is only given for jobs that require high skills and expertise. In other words, if you like to take a nap in the afternoon, go fishing on the weekend, in another word lazy like me; then this visa is not for us.

The applicants must submit proof of a contract or employment by company/organization.

Commonly Asked Questions?

Before coming to India, there are always questions that you are likely to have to answer. Let's explore some of them.

Do you need an AIDs test to live in India?

The answer is YES. Now, if you stay in India more than 2 years, then it is required for you to get an AIDs test at a government hospital. I don't why there is such a requirement. I have located this piece of information from an Indian culture book, and then confirmed this info with a friend who had traveled to India. The only explanation he had for me is AIDs is a serious problem in India, and government is trying to control the situation as much they can. If you know anything about this, I would like to hear from you.

Where can I get an India Visa?

Now, instead of providing information that is available elsewhere, I have found a web page which lists all the Indian Embassies and Consultants throughout the world. Click here to view.
